How many EV chargers does a workplace need?
Start with the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that park on site today, then plan for growth over the next three to five years. Staff cars parked all day rarely need fast charging, so several 7kW chargers usually serve a workplace better than one high-power unit. Pool cars and vans that return to base between journeys may benefit from faster charging.

Why does load management matter for workplace charging?
Every building has a maximum supply capacity. Without load management, adding several chargers can exceed it and trigger an expensive upgrade from the District Network Operator. Dynamic load management shares the available capacity across all connected vehicles and reduces charging rates when the building’s demand rises, so more chargers can be installed on the existing supply.
What does a workplace charger installation involve?

Yes. Chargers must be notified to the District Network Operator, and larger installations may need approval or a supply assessment before connection. Penmilne manages this as part of the project.
Socketed chargers suit mixed fleets and staff who carry their own cables, and they are less prone to cable damage. Tethered chargers are more convenient for dedicated fleet bays.
Smart chargers with back-office software can record energy use by user or card, which helps with fleet reporting and reimbursing staff for business charging.
Small wall-mounted installations near the supply can take a day or two. Multi-bay car parks with groundworks and pedestal chargers are programmed over longer periods to keep parking available.
